Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, eager to learn, and curious. I teach in an urban K-5 elementary school in the SF Bay Area. My students absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! Each day my students come to school ready to try new things, to grow both personally and academically. They are the reason I am here.
It is important that my students feel safe, comfortable and welcome in our classroom.
The issues of every day life can be difficult for some. My students love having a classroom they can move freely around in, finding a comfortable place to read, write, or work on a project at.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given flexible seating options. I have noticed my students reading stamina has skyrocketed as they are able to use a "reading chair" (a stadium seat) to find a comfortable place to sit.
These wobble stools will help my students feel comfortable while keeping them engaged during small reading groups .
A main component of small reading groups is discussing the text students have read. For many students, it is nerve-racking sharing their ideas, thoughts, and opinions with peers. Having the ability to slowly move during these discussions will help students feel at ease!
