Where is your favorite place to read? Is it soft and comfortable? Does it make reading an enjoyable time for you? I think there should be the same environment for independent reading in my classroom.
My students are full of enthusiasm for learning.
They come in the classroom each day happy and full of energy. They are eager to learn. They especially love their independent reading time. During this time, they are allowed to find special places around the room to read. I have purchased chair cushions for them to use during this time to make them more comfortable. I don't have enough for the entire class, so they have to share. They are so understanding about this! My wish is to have enough "comfort" for each and every student in my class.
My Project
Each day, my students are given the opportunity to read self-selected books independently. They choose books that are best suited for them, their reading level, their favorite authors, their interests. I feel it is important to encourage my students to read, read, and read some more. This is the best way to become a better reader.
I have designed my classroom space to have "nooks and crannies" for my students to read in. One of these special spaces is a reading loft, built by an amazing, inspiring teacher who "willed" her classroom to me. The pillows I am asking for will give my students more comfort in these reading nooks, allowing them to really enjoy their independent reading time. Just like adults, children need a soft, comfortable place to get lost in the books they are reading.
My project will make a difference to my students because they will come to feel a comfort in their reading that will carry on throughout their lives.
I think that because most of their day is spent sitting at their desks or sitting on the rug, they should have the opportunity to have a different, more comfortable place to read.
