A Comfy Place to Read

My students need two bean bags and eight soft seats to use during Reading Workshop and at the library center.

Ms. Poole PS 219 Kennedy - King
Brooklyn, NY Grades PreK-2

I am a kindergarten teacher in a high needs school in Brooklyn. I teach nineteen eager readers the skills they need to build a strong foundation for life-long reading.

Every day, during Reading Workshop, my students spend time reading independently and reading with a partner. We start this in September by learning how to "read" the pictures and then grow throughout the year until we are reading words. This is a monumental journey in the lives of my five and six year old students. During our Reading Workshop time, students are placed in reading partnerships around the room so that everyone has enough space. This also helps to manage the noise level, so that I do not have four students sitting together chatting instead of reading. What this also means is that some students have to sit and read together on the floor instead of at their tables.

I am requesting eight soft seats for partners to use when they have to sit on the floor together. With these easily portable soft seats, partnerships could grab a soft seat, their reading bags and head to their reading spot to sit and read comfortably together. A soft cushion is more comfortable and less distracting that cold, hard tile floors! Similarly, when students visit our classroom library, they have no other place to sit than the floor. Therefore, I am also requesting two bean bag seats for students to comfortably read and relax in when they use the library center. The bean bags will not only make the library center more comfortable, but they will also make it more exciting and inviting for students to read there. Additionally, we have received several donations of books both this year and last year through DonorsChoose, and the addition of comfy reading seats would enhance our reading curriculum!

Your help will bring soft, comfortable seats for my young, eager readers to use during Reading Workshop and at the library center. By helping me provide an inviting, comfortable space for my kindergarten students to read, they can focus on the actual reading, not being bothered by the cold tile floor. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness and generosity!
