Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are on grade level or struggling readers. Most of my students are Latinos with Spanish speaking parents. They are energetic and eager to learn, as well as excited to teach each other. They take pride in the work they accomplish and always want to do better.
They are interested in learning about others who are different from them.
Even when something is difficult, they do their best to push through what is challenging to them. They want to understand what is unknown to them.
My Project
My students need a safe haven to read, a place to feel free to enter the world of their book. Sitting at a desk is not comfortable for all students. By having more comfortable seating in the classroom, students will be more engaged with their chosen book. By having pillows, chairs, and bean bags available for students to use, students will be more comfortable and be able to see reading time as a sacred time. This will then increase their reading skills!
Research shows that comfort leads to successful reading engagement.
According to Daniels (2011), “On a typical day, we found students reading on bean-bag chairs inside classrooms or outside the rooms perched on stairs and retaining walls. The students responded to the culture shift by focusing on their reading for extended periods of time. One student exclaimed, 'I'm finally comfortable! I never could concentrate on reading when I had to sit up at a desk.'" As shown in this student’s remark, not all students can read at a desk.
Giving students a choice of where to sit increases reading engagement. This is also seen in a study done by Kelley & Clausen-Grace (2006). They stated, “A guided-reading group had organized the library to make it more appealing. The physical environment was not a concern either. We had couches, a chair, pillows, and even lawn chairs available for students to use while they read for a specified amount of time. Students reported feeling safe and relaxed while they read.” They had altered the school’s culture to allow students to feel more comfortable and safe while they read. It became a leisure activity and not a mandated one.
Overall, based on research and personal experience, students are more engaged with their reading when they have feel safe.
