Jacqueline Kennedy said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your world. Love of books is the best of all.” I have the fantastic opportunity to loop with my Kindergartners from last year,so I will be their First Grade teacher this year. Their favorite thing to do is curl up and read.
My children are a very diverse group with a large range of academic and social abilities.
They became very close in Kindergarten, and have developed a very strong team mentality. This group is very cooperative, always willing to help one another complete a task. Our school has a very interesting dynamic, including a diverse population coming from a large range of socioeconomic statuses. A large portion of our school is low income, receiving free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Each day my children engage in Daily 5 Literacy activities. The pieces of the Daily 5 are: Read to Someone, Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Read to Someone and Read to Self are two favorites for Daily 5. My children will use the comfy chairs to curl up and read a book alone, or they will sit next to one another in the chairs to read to a partner. The lamp will provide them a more gentle environment to read in because we can turn off our harsh fluorescent lights.
My main goal as a First Grade teacher is to inspire my children to become lifelong readers.
I am hoping that by providing them with a comfortable environment to read in they will learn to love reading and enjoy every moment that they have the opportunity to read, whether in the classroom or at home.
