My Students
My school is located in a small rural community in southwest New Jersey. Although this is a low socioeconomic area, my students strive to achieve beyond their current situation.
The goal of my 5th ELA classroom is to inspire a true, life-long love of reading for my students.
They are smart, funny, interesting 9-11 year olds with active imaginations. Many are struggling readers, but want to improve. I feel lucky to teach them right here in my own community where I get to see my students grow into successful adults.
My Project
The goal of every ELA teacher is to really foster a love of reading. If students have a cozy place to enjoy a book in our classroom, especially with a friend, it will encourage them to read more. I have students that want to come back to the classroom at recess and read in addition to reading during the school day. I buy hundreds of book at garage sales and thrift shops for my kids, but we don’t really have a soft spot to enjoy them. We need a comfortable place in the room for this that includes Soft Seats and a carpet. When children are relaxing when they read, they are reading more, and that is the goal- to want them reading! The more they read, the better they get at practicing word attack skills, using context clues, practicing fluency, and building their vocabularies. And they think it’s fun!!
