My Students

These students are primarily juniors and seniors who are interested in learning more about gender equality, expression, identity, sexuality, and violence. Our school is extremely diverse, so learning about our differences can help build a stronger attitude of acceptance. Our school is a Title I suburban high school serving 2000 students, many of whom are college bound and interested in learning about our complex society. This project will promote an awareness of those who face injustices and, hopefully, ignite a passion for a generation of young advocates.

My Project

Gender Studies is a course offering at our high school where students can learn more about gender issues. Boy Erased is a memoir by Garrard Conley that explores the obstacles faced by gay youth. We need a class set of this book. Through the eyes of a gay man, students will learn about the injustices, heartaches, and confusion that the LGBT community often faces. With this knowledge, there is hope that all students will make informed choices and opinions that are based on facts. The goal is for young people to be more understanding and less biased toward peers who may not fit into the norms of society.
