Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a place of community, shared expression, collaboration, mindful practice and new learning experience. A lot happens in this classroom beyond reading, writing and math. My student come from all parts of the community as my particular program is not available in all our district schools. As my program is considered a transitional Developmental Delay classroom to address the students social emotional needs. With this my students come from all parts of our city and bring with them the experience of their families, homes, and neighborhoods. My students often present with temporary homelessness, childhood trauma, and foster care.
One hundred percent of our students participate in free and reduced-priced lunch.
Sometimes, these things enhance our student learning and make it a richer experience for everyone. Other times this brings chaos and conflict. Whatever the students come with, we work together to be a classroom community of learners moving forward to be a achieve academic and social success.
My Project
The students who attend my high-poverty school face daily challenges in meeting their basic needs. It is my hope that access to the items in this project will help meet the needs of students so that they are able to better engage in their education. Students can't focus on learning if they are hungry. Even though the school provides breakfast and lunch, often students come in late, and miss the school breakfast.
This project supports students by providing everyday supplies to support their wellness - supplies that most of us take for granted.
The items in this project are all things that students ask for or use on a regular basis. Hand sanitizer, tissues, and Clorox wipes are part of making our classroom a clean, healthy, and welcoming place for students. The snacks are some of the students favorites for example Cheez-It, Austin Cookies & Crackers, Synder Hanover Mini Pretzels, Capri Sun and water because we live in a area were it is hot.
My students would benefit from being offered healthy snacks midday. Since I have a classroom with students who live in single parent families, foster care, this becomes an enormous expense for me. Providing students with healthy snacks will enhance learning by satiating hunger, while promoting healthy eating.
Students are often tired and lethargic when they are hungry. Healthy snacks will help them stay alert and focus on learning.
