Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 25 very enthusiastic 1st graders. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area surrounded by factories among the industrial sector of downtown Los Angeles. We are classified as a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students are all English language learners, some of whom are also struggling with learning disabilities. The majority of the parents of my students work long hours in the surrounding factories. Though they can provide some of the basics such as food and shelter (though some families live in groups together). Providing things such as new school uniforms, shoes, socks and jackets don't rate high as essentials for survival.
My students have many obstacles in their path; poverty, social, community challenges (gangs), language, in addition to a few with learning disabilities all which impede or hinder my student's opportunity for success in the future.
My Project
A classroom with 25 students can make a big mess- every day! Little first graders are still learning the responsibility of cleaning up after themselves. Many classroom projects and activities involve cutting; whether paper, or craft materials. These activities tend to produce a lot of scraps the kids tend to drop on the floor. Our short staffed school allows only for the custodian to empty trashcans on a daily basis and light floor cleaning 2 times a week.
Having a vacuum in the classroom would help keep our classroom clean and alleviate the dust that accumulates in our bungalow classroom.
In having a classroom vacuum we can clean everyday before we go home so that we can start the next day with a dust free and clean room free of scraps a small messes children tend to make. The thermometer is a necessary classroom tool because our school does not have the luxury of a nurse everyday. In having the thermometer it can assist me in determining whether or not my students have a fever and need to go home. Usually, when the nurse is not there the office staff is inundated with students who are ill or feeling under the weather. By using the thermometer I can determine if they need to go home due to a fever. I believe it expedites the procedure for the office staff when they just need to make a phone for pick up instead of trying to determine what ails the child. Also, many times my students feel needy and want to visit the nurse. They appear fine and don't display the usual signs of a child who is feeling under the weather using the thermometer I can quickly see if there is merit to their request.
