This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of the students in my classroom have experienced trauma in their lives, and school is their safe place. They come to school to escape what is happening at home. My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class struggles with basic phonemic awareness and letter recognition.
About 90% of my students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
My Project
I am asking for basic art supplies. I would like my students to have crayons, markers and paper. I want to provide some time and materials to allow my children to explore their creative side. They need to have access to these materials. Our school does not provide these for us. With these art supplies, my students will be able to create masterpieces, but also be able to use these supplies in all areas of our school day. We will be able to explore deeper concepts of language arts, math, science and social studies with projects and games that allow for art to be incorporated.
