Ms. Lee from Bronx NY is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need yoga balls and a folding dish chair to create a flexible seating learning environment.

I teach two classes (ICT and general education) of 4th grade math through our newly implemented departmentalization. My students come to my class with the hopes of escaping any worries of the outside world such as homelessness, poverty, and everyday family struggles. Many students enter my class viewing math as a dreaded subject. They express many concerns: "It's boring," "I'm not good at it," "Math is too complicated," "When will I use this?" and "Nothing ever makes sense in math." My response? "That's only because you haven't experienced math with me!"
Through hands-on exploration and real life math connections, I am proud to say that I am able to create a classroom full of math lovers.
My little learners become eager to start a new week and see what engaging activities I have planned. By launching a variety of projects, I am able to reach the majority of the students in my classroom. Nothing brings a smile to my face like hearing my students cry out, "No way, math is over already?" after dedicating 120 minutes to study.
Traditional seating has made it difficult for my students to engage in collaborative learning and gain the movement they need throughout the school day. With the help of flexible seating, my students will have more opportunities to work together on projects and assignments while gaining much needed movement throughout the school day.
A classroom with fewer desks and more seating options would encourage my students to build lasting relationships, while supporting the development of their social skills, engagement, and attentiveness. The yoga balls will be used as a safe and appropriate way for my active students to express movement through learning.
It will also allow my students to easily choose new spots in the room to sit without needing to move a heavy traditional desk and chair. The saucer chair will be used as a comfy seat for students to dive into their journal writing.
These items will help students feel at home and make difficult lessons feel less stressful through a more relaxing classroom environment.
