Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is made up of such a diverse group of students. We have approximately 500 students and we are located in Carson, CA that is known to have a very ethnically diverse population. In my class, I have Hispanic, African American, Samoan, and Phillipino students. It is so wonderful teaching such a diverse group. About 505 of our students speak a second language. About 75% of our students are on the lunch program. We offer breakfast in the classroom as well as a hot meals after school for those students who need it. We offer after school programs such as the Boys and Girls Club, SYS, and Fioloa. (A Somoan after school support program)
"Wow, Mrs. Lopez, we have an amazing library in our class!" This is a statement that one of my students recently made on the first day of school.
Our students love to READ! We emphasize reading, writing, math, and STEAM projects as we are implementing the Common Core Standards and strategies. In the third grade though we are greatly challenged with teaching our students typing skills. In addition, the students need to do research for STEAM projects.
My Project
These Chromebooks will enable my students to research information for STEAM projects in class. In addition, they will give my students an advantage in learning necessary typing skills which are needed for our state testing at the end of the year.
Research for STEAM projects is a skill that my students need to master!
When they are given a task, their teams are asked to research and find out information to assist them to be successful.
When we have to wait until our assigned computer lab time, the excitement of their group is limited. To be able to immediately do that research, when the groups are forming their ideas as to how to approach a task, would be so valuable. This would also allow me to do direct instruction as to how to research a topic. The students are so easily distracted by sites that have nothing to do with their immediate topic. I would be able to show them how to quickly find sites that will help them to accomplish their goal. Then for those groups who are not as familiar with using the internet, I will be able to instruct them in a smaller setting. I will be able to monitor their progress and assist again as needed.
In addition our third graders need to learn to type. Daily typing instruction can be accomplished by having the student use the Chromebooks on a rotating basis during our group rotation time. This daily practice, even for ten minutes a day will enable my students to become familiar with the keyboard and the different functions of the keyboard. This skill is vital to their success on state testing.
Another valuable aspect to the classroom Chromebooks is the ability for the students to access reading library sites.
