This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a unique population of inner city students. We live in a suburb of Charlotte, but the Queen City doesn’t offer royal treatment for all. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes. Some come from homes with absent parents, and some don’t have homes at all. They deal with more hardship than I can imagine; yet, most of them still come to school with a smile on their face! They’re a resilient, inspiring group who deserve to have the best education we can provide for them.

My Project

Many of my students have only read one or two novels as a class in their career. Most of them are hesitant to pick up a book on their own or defeatedly stare at a book that they have very little interest in. I hope to use a modern novel, A Monster Calls Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd, to inspire my group of reluctant readers into discussion about the themes and lessons this title dives into. I want to show them that there are more exciting stories out there besides “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (although I do love those!). I believe this will be one of the books they remember reading and recount to their children one day!
