Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a wonderful bunch of curious, energetic, and driven young people who work hard to do the best they can for themselves and their families. They are new to our wonderful little school and becoming part of our family-like community. But they are faced with challenging circumstances growing up in Oakland. One of their biggest academic struggles is around reading.

One quarter of my students are English learners and half are long term English learners.

All but one are students of color, most receive free or reduced lunches, and most will be the first in their family to go to college.

We are in the midst of building our classroom community around a love for History and English, rooted very much in a passion for reading. They are at a perfect moment, entering into high school, to develop and grow their identities as readers and learners.

My Project

These books will be a key part of growing a love of reading in my students. We read most days in class during self-selected reading as well as for homework. Students choose their own books to read that fit their interests and reading levels. This is a key practice to developing their confidence and skills as readers. To achieve this, we need an updated library. Specifically, having this library will help us in the following ways.

We simply need more high interest books: there are amazing books that every student should be able to access as easily as going to the bookshelf in their classroom.

Our class bookshelves are the main source of books for my students. To make sure they are being filled with reading-ready books, we are asking for popular books across a range of genres that all came highly recommended from teachers and students.

We also need more books across a variety of reading levels. I teach students whose reading levels range from about a 5th grade level to a near college level. They all need skill-appropriate books. Finally, as a humanities classroom we need books that cross themes and bring in social science and social issues into our every day reading.

These books will inspire and enrich our students in many ways. Please support our pursuit of reading!
