The students in my classroom love to read. They also love to compete. This makes for a fun and friendly competition between classes. I have challenged my students to read at least 2 books a month from now until the end of the school year.
Every day they come in excited to tell me about another book they have finished.
They tell me to add this one to their list of completed books. They smile when they see their name on the board after finishing a book.
The friendly competition in my classes encourages and inspires everyone to read daily. It encourages them to dive into a book and not only finish it, but also talk about it.
My Project
My school has around 1,000 students--57% on Free and Reduced lunch--all who use the library. The most popular books usually have a large waiting list and my classroom library has been good, but not quite enough.
The option of new books with varying levels and interests will entice many students to come back for more.
The diverse titles and genres will help students choose a book that is just right for them.
In Language Arts, "Just Right" books are necessary for students to be successful. We use our books to practice analyzing. For example, they identify plot development, character traits, and figurative language.
The classroom library supports students who cannot get to a public library, students who have school library fines, as well as students who read so much, they need extra options.
