Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
On my first day of school, I was handed a business card by one of my students. Immediately I saw the potential that my students possessed and that they saw in themselves! My students are readers, writers, mathematicians, experts, and change makers. Our school focus is developing students that will one day change the world. Their constant questioning of injustices and suggestions for change in our community is inspiring.
Diversity is what makes our community strong.
We are located in a low-income neighborhood where over 50% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. There are families coming in from all over the city to attend our school. Students have learned to accept others and create families inside our classrooms. Our students get along with people who may be different from themselves. Our school is inclusive, which means that high needs students are fully integrated throughout the entire school day.
My Project
Our classroom library is in desperate need for more books to accommodate the various reading levels and interests. Since this is my first year at this school, I adopted a small collection of books from previous teachers. Looking through our collection, it was realized that there just is not a wide enough selection for students to discover books that match both their reading level and interests. We need a well-stocked library with literature that has substance and that will inspire kids to keep reading more and more.
Books are the plane, and the train, and the road/They are the destination, and the journey/They are home —Anna Quindlen.
The books I have chosen to fill our library range in interests and genres. The hope is to have students interested in the stories I have selected for them but to become interested in reading in general. Books are not just an temporary getaway, they are a path to a better life.
