Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach four sections of ELA to bright and vivacious seventh and eighth graders at a newly formed 7-12 school in Boston. My students are reflective, receptive to feedback, and regularly collaborate with one another.

Currently, they are learning to read and comprehend challenging texts with less of my help by engaging in reciprocal teaching.

My Project

Our class has been doing a lot of teacher-assigned reading together this year--as a class, in small groups, and in pairs, but students haven't had as much of an opportunity to do self-directed reading. The books I'm hoping to buy for our classroom library include many of the titles that they have actually requested when I asked for their input. "I don't read" or "I hate reading" is also a response I got during this process of soliciting student input about a classroom library.

I want to challenge those skeptical students to give reading another shot.

These students probably haven't found a book that interests them. This shopping list for books spans different genres, authors, and levels. Everyone deserves to find and read literature that helps them make meaning in this world.
