I work in a school in Sunset Park Brooklyn. I teach a class of English Language learners. My students are first graders. They learn to read and write as they learn the English language. It is an amazing transformation to see children not only learn how to speak, but also read and write in a new language. For many students the biggest obstacle is taking the first step; speaking. For many, there is a long silent period where children listen and follow along by looking at pictures and following the print across a page. Little by little children read along with me. Sometimes their voices chime in for the repetitive parts then trail away. Certain characters are so engaging that children seem to read along more freely. My students love The Meanies! The characters seems to draw children in. The simple repetitive language encourages children to chime in. The stories are so delightful. These big books gradually build in story length, voocabulary and difficulty both scaffolding and pushing children's language growth along. I have small copies of some of these books. I would love the big book collection. It is so important for the children to not only hear the words but see the text as well. So much print work could be accomplished as the children begin to explore these books. When it comes to teaching children the meanies are anything but mean.
