Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm the teacher of the intellectually disabled moderate (IDM) program at my middle school. I work at a low-income school, with very few resources, and most of the families I work with are at or below the poverty level. I don't want to let lack of resources stand in the way of my students’ education. I want to be able to provide them with the best learning experience possible and opportunities that will help them progress.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to accomplish my goals when resources are limited and the demand is high.
I have 6th through 8th graders, and all my students are at different ability levels. I have nonverbal students who need different resources from my students who are struggling readers. I created a classroom environment that runs by centers, and centers lack the resources for the students’ levels. I want to create centers that will enrich all of my students’ learning.
Besides teaching intellectually disabled students, I am the Leadership teacher. I am very involved with the school and try to promote a positive, inclusive school culture. Our student population needs motivation and guidance, and I hope I can create that environment through Leadership events and activities.
My Project
The MacBook will greatly help my special education students this upcoming semester. My special education students learn and are more engaged through the use of visual and interactive lessons. Technology is essential to their productive learning. My district laptop is not helping me at all during lessons. None of the ports work, which does not allow me to add a second camera, microphone, additional screen, and wireless mouse. It constantly shuts down and has to be plugged in at all times. I need reliable technology that will support all the lessons I create for my students. I am more familiar with Apple and it is compatible with more programs I enjoy using.
Children need technology in the classroom to enhance and deepen their lifelong skills in an ever-changing technological world.
The laptop has tools that will give my students access to the different academic curriculum presented to them. The MacBook will be used to create different types of multimedia presentations, many of which call for adding music, graphics, etc. Students will have daily access to the Macbook to complete research and create projects in iPhoto, iMovie, and iBook, which is something I started to introduce before school closure. We are creating movies and this will help with editing the videos. I also want them to start doing more science projects and it’s easier for students to airdrop materials to me from the class iPads rather than emailing documents, images, etc.
