Ms. Dawson from Seattle WA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

A Children's Library Is a Beautiful Thing!

My students need books for read-aloud story time each day that cover a variety of genres, authors, and styles. My students need a set of cube chairs.

My Students

In my kindergarten classroom we start every day with a story, and these stories can set the tone for the rest of the day. The books we read open up my students' minds and get them thinking about things they might never have considered!

My kindergarteners are from a hugely diverse population.

They come from all over the globe, and all over our city. They are silly, quiet, wacky, calm and everything in between. One thing they all have in common is that they love hearing stories, and talking about those stories together. When we read and discuss stories together, they are exposed to things outside of their own experiences, and are using critical-thinking skills they might not get enough opportunities to use in their own lives.

My Project

The resources I am requesting will be the core of a children's story library that we wouldn't be able to access otherwise. Like so many other schools in a large city, our school is low-income as well as under-funded. The books we had to choose from when I first set up my classroom last year were often damaged, inappropriate, out of date, or simply not engaging. Through the generous help of others (as well as my local libraries!), I've managed to scrounge together a small children's library, which I am hoping to build into one that my students will cherish and love. The books on this list teach important lessons about science, math, and reading skills, as well as life lessons about friendship, altruism, and loving yourself. When we share these stories together every day, my readers will be transported into fantasy worlds they might not otherwise imagine, and will also be gaining invaluable knowledge about the world in which they live.

Contributions to this project will change the way my students are able to access engaging, fun, and important stories, that are both new and beloved classics.

The books this project will provide will brighten the day of every student who hears them, and will help to get their minds open and ready for the day of learning that is ahead of them.
