A Child With Autism Touched My Heart - Sensory Overload!
Help me give my students sensory balls for exploration and play; magnetic alphabet and number games for independent exploration and learning; and a sand and water table for learning through exploration.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Smiling, laughing, running, crying, screaming, talking, using sign language, skipping, jumping and bouncing balls - all before 9:00 AM. The U.S. Army slogan is "we do more before 9:00 AM, than most people do all day" ... That slogan is also a great description of an Autistic Support Classroom! My students are learning how to verbally communicate their wants and needs. They have energy, motivation, and a desire to express themselves, but do not always have the language skills necessary to complete the task. My students also have a need to expel excess energy, access to tactile resources will help to address their sensory needs. My students become overwhelmed during the day by events that most students consider "non-events" (walking to the cafeteria, a classmate shouting "I need help"). My students need resources to address these needs.
My Project
My students make daily progress through intensive teaching sessions. This requires students - not working directly with me - to be engaged in a meaningful independent learning activity.
Through your generosity my students will have access to games and activities that will meet their sensory and independent learning needs.
The sensory balls are easy to catch and throw. The magnetic alphabet, number, and color games target first grade skills in a way that allow for self correction and independent learning. The sand and water table targets sensory needs that keep students engaged and provide opportunities to explore digging, building, shaping, pouring, floating, and measuring.
