Regular third grade classroom with a diverse student population from inner-city, low income to older suburban neighborhood.

Building a life long JOY of reading. Open Court Anthologies have a place, but building the joy of reading needs more than a few pages. Due to tough economic times in education third graders were cut to using the library for only 20 minutes once a month. The library has only a few books of Beverly Cleary titles, not enough for me to share with my class. Next year our classes sizes will go way up. Sharing resources is a good choice to help kids.

I am blessed to share a set of 20 class books (The Boxcar Children) with the third grade "GATE" (gifted and talented edu.) teacher. She has been collecting "Charlotte's Web" and I would like to add to the collection with a kids' favorite..."Henry Huggins."

As state, city, and district economic resources dry up, it is the kids that bear the heaviest loads. As a teacher to eight year olds, I know that reading eases stress and opens minds to new possibilities. Help me reach across economic hard times and keep the joy of reading classics alive.
