My students need a teacher that can facilitate discussions without dominating them. I need to be able to enable a discussion discreetly with a silent chair or stool.

My Students
The school that I teach at is in Southeast Michigan and has about 1,100 students. My students attend a public high school with about 70% living at or below the poverty line and qualifying for free and reduced price lunch.
I teach Math and Science classroom for students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or a Cognitive Impairment.
The students that you will provide for in this grant are fourteen to eighteen years old and live in an urban area in South East Michigan. These students are struggling with academics and have IEPs, Individualized Education Plans, or more typically are referred to as special education students.
My Project
A couple of years ago in my classroom, I introduced the format of discussion-based learning. We have small group and large group discussions each week to enhance our curriculum. My job as the teacher is to facilitate these discussions but not to guide them, to let student's guide them and come to their own discoveries on the topics. I use a stool on the side of the classroom to keep myself inconspicuous but also able to jump in and spark the conversation when needed. The stool I currently use is very old and very squeaky!
A new stool may seem frivolous but in order to maintain the flow of the discussion, it is something that I really need.
I have found that if I am walking behind students it disrupts their thought process but if I sit at my desk they do not take the discussion as serious as they do if I am sitting off to their sides, ready to add in if needed.
