My school is rural, small, and community-centered. I teach 4K-8th grade general music and choir, which means I get to see and build relationships with every single student in the building. I am also working on my ESL license and will be teaching some Spanish/culture classes as well. This is only my third year teaching, but I am looking forward to seeing most students grow for over 9 years of their education! How exciting! One thing I love about my school is how community-centered it is and how families are really close-knit with the teachers, staff, and other families.
My students especially love to play instruments!
They light up when they walk in the room to see drums or xylophones out for them to play! One unique thing I particularly enjoy about my middle school students is their willingness to travel to nursing homes and the county special needs school to share music with other people! They are genuinely happy to be serving our community with music! With the addition of an ESL license and a new role with that, I am excited to bridge across the curriculum incorporating Spanish language, culture, geography, and music altogether!
My Project
My school was given a classroom set of guitars years before I began teaching, but none of the guitars came with cases or with method books or curriculum. This is my first year teaching guitar and my middle school students LOVE IT. Many have requested to take their guitars home to practice, but it hasn't been possible without cases to keep the instruments protected.
These guitar cases will give my students the opportunity to take their guitars home to practice, or to play at church, or to play with friends!
Learning how to play a stringed instrument (and learning how to sing along and become a songwriter) is a great way for students to cope with the mental and emotional stress of being tweens during a pandemic. I am also excited about having an actual method book for each student so they can practice and work ahead on their own if they are interested in that!
