Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an all-day kindergarten in a large city in Rhode Island. My school has approximately 550 students, of which about 70% qualify for free or reduced lunches. We have a high population of minority students, many with limited English skills.
Kindergarten used to be the place where children learned how to play with others and take turns. Five year-old children were given plenty of opportunity to develop gross motor skills and eye-hand coordination as well as social skills during the large time blocks devoted to play. Those days are gone! So much emphasis is put on academics in kindergarten today that the essentials of early childhood learning can be easily forgotten.
One of the highlights of each day is recess. How my children just love to get out and run and play! We do not have a fancy playground. In fact, we do not even have a nice area in which the children can play. But we can make the blacktop they call the recess yard a great place to learn and develop skills that will help them in the classroom. All we need is a supply of developmentally appropriate toys.
My children need an assortment of balls including various sizes and textures, bean bags, hula hoops and jump ropes. They also need a cart to store all materials. What a sight it will be to see all children actively engaged in a productive game or activity! How rewarding it will be to see children try and try at catching, jumping and throwing until they find success! What a thrill it will be to see children help each other learn new things! When recess time is over, children will develop responsibility as they put all materials neatly in the cart and safely store them away for the next day.
With your help, my children will soon have an assortment of playground equipment and a cart for storage, which will help turn our area of blacktop into a safe, productive play area in which students acquire the gross motor skills, eye-hand coordination and social skills that are so important to kindergarten children.
