This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a wonderful group of fourth graders who love hands-on learning! We are a Tile 1 Priority School in an Urban Community. The students in our school are considered economically disadvantaged and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite the many obstacles my young children face they are all committed to learning more everyday. Many of the children have been in classes together since Kindergarten creating many interesting, sibling-like relationships. They both support and challenge each other every day.
My students come to school with the goal of becoming a better reader.
They listen intently during read-aloud and participate enthusiastically during shared reading time. These children are constantly grabbing new books from our classroom library to read individually and with their peers. This excitement for reading is a love I hope to ingrain in my students so they become life-long readers.
My Project
Currently the rug in our classroom is too small for all students to sit on. Having a rug in the room gives students the opportunity to sit somewhere's other than their desk. The carpet is perfect for reading time. The students will gather on the rug every day for a read aloud story and they can utilize it during individual reading times.
I selected a solar system themed rug because my fourth graders learn about the solar system this year.
The rug will definitely help remind students about the order of the planets and ties in nicely with our curriculum.
