Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Seven years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
The classroom library area is the heart of our classroom. This special place provides my students a safe place to dream, wonder, discover and fall in love with books. For most of my students, this is their first experience with a classroom library and it is joy to see them being able to self-select books based on their personal interest without having the leave the classroom.
A carpet in our library area will provide an inviting and safe place for my students to fall in love with books.
We have several pillows and reading buddies and a carpet will provide a defined space for students to lay down and read books independently or with partners.
The carpet will be used daily as part of our literacy centers and at the end of they, when students get to play bilingual centers. Also, throughout the day, it will also be a safe place when students are in need to take a break to help them take care of their social emotional needs. This can be done with an adult or on their own. A carpet will definitely enhance the heart of our classroom.
