My students need books that are age appropriate and on their reading levels. The books requested were all chosen carefully and relevant to their lives.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a child I remember a bookshelf full of books and trips to the library. I had a quiet place to read and I know this is the experience of many of the users of Donors Choose. My students do not share those same experiences. Sometimes their only reading material is the instructions to a video game.
My school is a Title I school with a majority of students receiving free or reduced price lunches.
We are a very diverse school, which provides great opportunities for students to experience cultures they may not have regular exposure to. My students are all enrolled in special education, from grades K-5. Their academic levels are anywhere from one to five years behind their peers.
My Project
The books requested were all specifically chosen based on requests from students and recommendations from teachers and many librarians.
Some of the most checked out books from our school's library are the Elephant and Piggy series. These books are wonderful, as they are funny and great to read aloud. Also, they have so much emotion in them they really challenge my students to become better readers.
A common theme recommended was books about invention and creative thinking. I have chosen some books in that theme and they include; Rosie Revere, What Do You Do With an Idea?, The Most Magnificent Thing. Another theme that came up many times was books about being brave. Some books selected about being brave are; Extraordinary Jane, The Adventures of Beekle, and I am Rosa Parks. Another genre good for readers is wordless books. An example selected is Journey.
Your support of this project will have a direct and lasting impact on some of our most vulnerable students.
Please support adding new books to our classroom library that will engage struggling readers while challenging them with materials that interest them.
