My students need items that will build a sense of community in the mornings to begin their day, as well as the opportunity to use the same activities with literacy games during reading stations.
I have 50 extraordinary students that range from 9-10 years of age. They are thinkers, dreamers, and strive to be great readers. My students like to take “book trips” at my guided reading table. They are growing up in a small, rural community and come from many different backgrounds, with 8 of them speaking English as a second language. Within our school, over 60% of students normally receive free and reduced lunch, and we have received the opportunity this year for all students to receive free and reduced lunch. For many, our book discussions during my guided reading group have given them exposure to new places and information they ordinarily wouldn’t be exposed to.
My Project
My students would love to receive games and items to build community during homeroom time while practicing literacy skills during reading stations. They love having the opportunity to play games that engage them, but still teach them team building and literacy skills, so they would be excited to have more options to use.
Students need items that will help them remain engaged during class.
I would love for them to receive more working headphones, so more students can use online reading programs that model appropriate fluency and reading speed. They could also benefit from having stability cushions to use to sit on the floor or on the stools to increase their comfort while having carpet reading time.
