A Calm Art Room for Creative Kids with ADHD and Autism!
My students need 2 lava lamps, an air purifying Himalayan salt lamp with lavender oil diffuser, extra bulbs, lavender essential oil, and 2 peaceful art posters.
I am the art teacher at a Northern Ohio charter school for students who have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or Asperger's Syndrome (high functioning autism). Our school is a special education program founded on the principle that every child can learn. I teach 200 students at all grade levels (K-12).
I love my teaching assignment because I get to deliver art education to kids who all think outside of the box!
Most of my students are incredibly creative, and they are all open to learning about new art styles and techniques. The art classroom is a safe space for this special group of sensitive kids. I aim to create a place where their wild ideas and self expression are encouraged!
My Project
I have noticed that when my students relax, they create their best artwork. I am asking for materials, which will help make my art classroom an even more calm, inspiring environment for my students. Lava lamps are especially calming for my students when they feel frustrated or overwhelmed. Watching the smooth liquid flow up and down relaxes the mind while brainstorming ideas for an art project. I would also like to introduce an air purifying Himalayan salt lamp to the classroom. The combination of the warm glow of the salt rock and the scent of lavender essential oil will surely create a calm art-making environment. I am also asking for 2 art posters which center around the idea of peace. I am hoping these visual cues will remind students that they are safe to be themselves and share ideas in a peaceful classroom.
Please help my happy, huggable, and hyper students learn to relax in the calm atmosphere of our art classroom.
