I have been teaching math at Roy Cloud School for 31 years. I am passionate about teaching and committed to empowering students to be successful. Putting forth less that 100% (for students and for myself) is not acceptable. Providing an infrastructure for student success and providing equal access to materials is essential for all students to improve their math skills with the result being improved confidence and pride. I want all of my students to be successful. I would like my 6th and 7th grade students to have access to a class set of scientific calculators. Having a uniform class set of calculators will enable my students to demonstrate their understanding of higher order math skills such as trig functions, right triangle applications, and complex percent problems. Each student will benefit by having in-class access to a calculator that has the same process needed for solving the above-mentioned problems. Students who do not have access to a calculator at home will have the opportunity to check one out as needed. The materials necessary for this project are twenty-seven (13) Texas Instruments TI-34II calculators. Roy Cloud School is a K-8 magnet school. Our enrollment is 658 students, of which 124 are in 6th and 7th grade. Roy Cloud School serves students of different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. Students from throughout our school district may apply to attend Roy Cloud School and many students do apply because of our reputation for maintaining high behavior and academic standards. While some of our 6th and 7th grade students can afford to buy a scientific calculator, others cannot. Equal access to materials is essential for the success of all students.
