My students are 95 of the best students that you can imagine! I teach 6th grade Social Studies to 95 students in a small, rural town in South Carolina. At our school, there is a higher than average poverty rate, but my students never let that affect their academics. They always strive for excellence no matter the challenges that they face. The range of abilities in my class are from students with special needs to the students who are in Gifted and Talented. Some of my students come to school with little more than the clothes on their backs. Providing classroom materials and money for trips is not something that their parents are able to do. However, despite financial difficulties, my students always bring their best to the classroom and want to achieve more through education.
My Project
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live during the medieval times? Could you imagine the excitement that vibrated through the stands as you waited for the jousting to begin? Sitting with your friends and deciding which knight you felt should be the victor and should be named the most noble? These are all questions that could be answered for my students with one bus ride.
With one trip, my students will receive the experience of a lifetime.
They will travel to Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament, and will get to experience what it was like during this time period. While visiting Medieval Times, they will be served lunch while they watch expert horsemanship and knights fight to victory with blades.
Although our small, rural town has many charms, it does have one downside that does impact my students in a large way. Many of the families that live in this area are high-poverty families. Therefore, it is not possible for them to pay large amounts of money to take their children to experience this fantastic representation of the middle ages. In addition to this, the school does not have the funding to pay for this trip either. That is why we are hoping that we can receive this funding so that these truly deserving students can experience this amazing trip back in time!
