Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach chemistry at a charter high school in the heart of Silicon Valley. We are a new school and just graduated our first class last year. The majority of my students come from immigrant families and many of them will be the first in their families to attend college.
All of my students have amazing dreams and aspirations to become leaders and change makers within their community as well as beyond.
Over the last few years, I have been inspired by their hard work and dedication to make a positive change in their community. Many of them dream of changing not only their own futures but also changing the lives of their families. I cannot wait to see what our future doctors, scientists, engineers and more create.
My Project
These portable bunsen burners will take our lab to the next level and allow students to investigate science phenomena in a way that they were not able to before. Our lab is in its infant stages as we are a new and growing school woking to build a STEM culture. By participating in scientific inquiry, students are able to increase their comfort and confidence and see themselves as true scientists.
By engaging in hands-on inquiry projects, students step into the role of scientist and are able to not only increase their content knowledge but also technical skills that will carry them into 21st century careers.
People are naturally inclined to ask questions and to seek out knowledge but tend to stop asking questions when simply given answers or told what to think. I want my students to develop a passion for learning that is fueled by inquiry and always asking questions. In order to do this, I need to create a lab space that makes my students feel like scientists and that allows them to investigate the scientific phenomena that explain the world around us.
