I am a first-grade teacher at a K-3 school in southern Maine. The school that I work at has a diverse community of learners with a wide range of financial security. Located in close proximity to a naval base, we have a large population of military families, so roster changes throughout the school year are frequent. Our school works hard to be a place where the needs of all students are met, and we are invested in helping children to be caring and well-rounded learners.
I love the energy and enthusiasm that each of my first graders brings to our classroom.
Along with that energy comes a unique personality and learning style. I work hard to get to know each of my students and to find different ways to help them do their best learning in my classroom each day.
My Project
My students are creative, imaginative and enthusiastic. They love to build with the amazing block set in our classroom, but there is rarely enough time for them to get started. When my students get out the blocks to play during indoor recess, it takes them so long to dig through the different types of blocks to find the pieces they want, and it takes them so long to put the blocks away, that it is rarely worth getting them out to begin with. Currently, the blocks are piled on two shelves. There is no way to sort them by piece and keep them organized. If anyone bumps the shelf, blocks fall off.
This shelving unit, made especially for blocks, would be a great addition to our classroom; it would allow students to easily locate the pieces they want to use to build and create, and would allow them to clean up efficiently and independently.
