I work in an inner city school that is home to almost 650 wonderful, diverse children in grades PreK-6. Eighty four percent of our students are classified as high needs. Fifty eight percent are classified as economically disadvantaged. Forty eight percent are English Language Learners and thirty four percent have special needs. My school has one of our District's SAIL programs for students who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I teach in a sub-separate SAIL classroom.
My remarkable students, all of whom have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, are not currently able to be mainstreamed into a typical classroom.
Most people learn by a combination of seeing, hearing and doing. My students are more likely to rely on just one learning style so meeting their needs requires teaching the way they learn best. This way they can attend to and process the information which is presented giving them a much greater chance of success.
My Project
My students are fascinated by anything that has to do with insects. According to our Life Science State Frameworks, my students need to be able to compare the ways different animals use their body parts and senses to do the things they need to do to grow and survive in their specific environments.
My students need specific materials that address their individual learning styles in order to ensure they can attain and surpass our Life Science Standards.
My auditory and visual learners would excel using the Your Backyard: The Life & Journey of the Amazing Monarch Butterfly CD, From Caterpillar to Butterfly Big Book Activity Kit, National Geographic Readers: Caterpillar to Butterfly book and The Bug Book. My students who learn best through touch and manipulation would love the Bugs & Insects Instant Learning Center, Scoop-A-Bug Sorting Kit, Insect Lore Live Butterfly Growing Kit and Real Bugs Discovery Kit.
All of these materials will engage all my students as they discover the fascinating world of the insects around them.
