Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Where can music take you? For our students the possibilities truly are endless. As an urban school with a predominately minority population, many of which qualify for free or reduced price lunch, many students at NHS face financial and social obstacles that inhibit their chances to attend college. Music has been a pathway to opportunities for higher learning for students at NHS, with many students regularly receive scholarships from major universities and conservatories.
Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." We use this as one of our guiding principles; We strive to not just achieve excellence, but to instill in our students a habit of doing their best in all that they do, whether it is in a musical performance, or in any other aspect of their life.
We demand a lot of our students - each student is required to learn and performs a solo on their instrument, in addition to playing literature of the highest quality and difficulty in their Concert Ensembles. We have found that the higher we set the bar, the more our students exceed our expectations!
My Project
Reeds are the life of a woodwind instrument. Without a quality reed of the appropriate strength, students cannot produce the characteristic tone quality that they are looking for. While metal mouthpieces last a long time, reeds are organic, and so they break down over time and need to be replaced.
The beginning of a brand new year is a great time to give each student a brand new, high-quality reed to encourage their playing in the new year.
This project would allow each student to experience a quality reed brand of the appropriate strength, and help them hear how great a sound they can make.
