Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We start each morning with an inspirational song which gets us pumped up and ready to learn! My students are becoming more self-aware as our focus on teaching the value of kindness, doing the right thing, honor, trust and telling the truth the first time are reinforced each week as we read stories focused on these character traits.
My campus is considered to be a one hundred percent free breakfast and free lunch campus.
This means that my students come from low-income families. When asked about books at home, many of my students simply don't have any books at home. My students are kind, little humans who are excited about reading new books! This is why I provide a library of books in my room for my students.
My Project
With school and library closures, many of my students no longer have access to books. During this stressful time, one of the things that matters most to me is making sure my students keep reading books they enjoy!
“All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talents.” ~ John F.
Kennedy.
As students read their books, I will check in on them during our weekly phone conversations. I will ask them about what they're reading to continue growing their comprehension skills and stay directly connected and engaged with their individualized learning. The scented markers will be used to make fun, colorful signs for students during our virtual office hours.
First grade is a critical time for developing and fostering strong reading skills that students will take with them to second grade and beyond. Help me close the expanding, educational gap as we try our best through the new normal of distance learning.
