Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to learn! They come to school prepared each day and ready to acquire knowledge! My students come from diverse backgrounds and low socioeconomic factors. They start their day-long before they get to school. As ENL students, they have difficulty with reading and writing activities. They never give up and continue to work hard in all academic areas. Their enthusiasm each day is contagious and it makes coming to work at school each day a pleasure!
My Project
My students will be introduced to the historical fiction genre through the book The War that Saved My Life. This story takes us on a journey with Ada, a girl with a club foot who is treated unfairly for her disability and is sent out of London to the country during the war. Ada finds a new life, hope and the love a family in an unusual place.
The message of this book about friendship and learning from mistakes will show my students that you can find hope in all situations.
My students will participate in book circles and discuss the theme and characters of this book. They wil be able to write essays and think deeply about what motivates each of the characters actions in this book. My biggest hope is that this book will show my students that if there is a will - there is a way and that if you put your mind to something you can achieve it.
