A Book Of Their Own!

My students need gift cards in order to purchase a book of their own at the Barnes & Noble bookstore.

My Students

One gift I try to give to my students is the love of reading. There is tremendous pressure on children to read well enough to pass the "test". This pressure has literally caused children to loathe reading. For many children reading has become a horrendous chore which they would rather avoid.

I am a Reading teacher in a Title I school which is located in New York City.

In the past I have given books as gifts to children. I noticed the children treasured and read those books. I have sometimes wondered how my students would react if they were taken to a bookstore and were allowed to choose books of their own to read. Could this possibly give the gift of loving to read back to them? Unfortunately, most children do not have access to a bookstore.

My Project

I have been in touch with the local Barnes and Noble which allows class trips to their store. For the past several years I have taken my students there and it has always been an outrageous experience. The trip includes a read aloud, activities tied to the read aloud and a tour of the store. They even set up a display of books geared toward my students (plus a 20% discount).

In reality, many of my students, due to older brothers and sisters, are aware of the past trips to Barnes & Noble.

They are desperate for the same experience. It would be fabulous to take my students to Barnes & Noble and let them buy books with their own gift cards. For most of my students this would be a new experience, as many of their families simply cannot afford to spend money on books. Thank you for your very kind and generous consideration.
