Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade in an urban school. Most of my students are from immigrant families with little or no literacy. They have few, if any, books at home. One of the most important goals for me is to instill in my students a love of books. That I can do! I can fill their minds with great stories and poetry. I can show them that there is great writing that talks about their lives, their experience, their families. I need your help to give them a book that does all this. Neighborhood Odes by Gary Soto is full of odes to weddings, to tortillas, to lawn sprinklers! This collection will be a wonderful way for me to introduce my students to poetry that speaks to them. This is so important at the start of the year because many people (adults, too!) don't think poetry can mean something to them. But I want to do more than share the book with them--I want to give it them so they can take it home and share with their family. I want them to own something that they can read at dinner, in bed, when they visit their grandparents. Help me give a gift of reading that starts in the classroom--and then goes way beyond!
