My students are from a rural community in western Wisconsin. Many of them are from low income households. Our school district has a free and reduced-price lunch population of more than 50 percent.
Despite their limited resources, students are eager to come to school to learn and grow.
They bring with them a desire to do their very best.
Learning to read and enjoy all forms of print is important to their future success. There is an innate sense of the need to build knowledge through reading.
My Project
In an effort to support literacy in our school, we try to put quality trade books in the hands of our students. Due to limited funding resources, that often means shopping garage sales and thrift stores to be able to give students books they can choose and keep.
It would be wonderful to give them a brand new book to share with their family.
Having the ability to pick out a brand new book to keep forever will help increase motivation to read and explore new literature. Students will be excited to choose a book that interests them, thus encouraging them to read.
