Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a middle school teacher in a Title I charter school, I have the privilege of teaching students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Our school is rich in diversity. A majority of our students speak a second language at home including, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Amharic, and Turkish. Many of my diverse group of students also come from low-income families. Along with their diverse backgrounds, my students also have various learning abilities. Many of my students perform below grade level and are considered "at-risk." In addition, some of these same students are faced with learning disabilities such as dysgraphia, dyslexia, and ADHD.
Although my students come from different backgrounds and abilities, they all share a love of reading and learning.
For many of my students, the transition to 6th grade can be difficult. Students are introduced to higher level texts and often struggle with reading comprehension and critical thinking. Because of this, many students become discouraged and no longer find reading enjoyable. With your help, my goal is to provide my students with the tools and skills necessary to become avid readers and writers.
My Project
"The more you read the more you know." Studies have proven time and time again that the number of books in the home directly correlates with academic achievement. Because many of my students come from low-income households, most of them are unable to purchase books of their own. For this project, I am requesting seven Scholastic Birthday Coupon Books. With these birthday coupons, my students will be able to purchase a $5 book from Scholastic Book Clubs. With your help, I can bring over 200 books into the homes of my students.
In order to cultivate a love of reading, I want to give my students the opportunity to purchase a book of their choice.
I would love the opportunity to show my students that they deserve a book of their own! Please consider helping us celebrate our love of reading all year long!
