My 5th grade students need 6 copies of "Carlotta's Kittens" by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. My 4th grade students need the non-fiction companion books in the "Magic Treehouse" series by Mary Pope Osborne.
My class is comprised of 20 energetic students with learning differences in grades 3, 4 & 5. Our school is in a rural area with 32% of students receiving free and reduced lunch.
One of the ways to hook reluctant readers is to get them interested in a book series that provides them with familiar characters in a new setting. Having the next book in the series each grade is reading will provide students with the motivation to keep reading with the enthusiasm they have shown all year. They are absolutely enthralled with these characters and it amazes me how much they look forward to reading about them!
With the Magic Treehouse books, the non-fiction companion guides to each story have been invaluable in providing information about our world in a way that is very relevant to our students. We have been able to borrow enough of the fiction books for each story, but there are never enough of the non-fiction companion guides. We are sharing one or two copies among 8 students.
Do you remember your favorite book or series from your childhood? It is something most of us never forget. Your help will enrich each child's school experience by not only giving them a book they really want to read, but having a community of learners to share it with because we can all read the same book at the same time.
