Help me give my students books they can read and use their imagination to travel to new places and have new adventures! They will be keeping these high interest materials for their own!
“This is my favorite place in the whole school!” Students love our library media center. It’s cozy and inviting, filled with books with adventures yet to travel and experiences yet to have. Students and teachers research, investigate, explore, use technology, and read in our media center daily. Book checkout and lessons happen in here as well as small group work.
We make the most of what we can with what we have, but our children need more.
We are a Title I school with a limited budget, and curricular needs take precedence when ordering. Often, pleasure reading materials and important materials, such as character building and citizenship (including digital), get excluded from the orders.
We are the future leaders in our school, and we focus on our growth as individuals, encouraged to be unique and accepting. We build foundations for our children to help them succeed and exceed in life. We are also diverse in ethnicities and abilities. Our life experiences are diverse as well, making background information and materials to provide that very important to our learning.
My Project
Our Title I neighborhood school will be hosting a Summer Reading program! The principal and I, along with teachers and staff, will be arranging for meet-ups at our six neighborhood parks this summer. With our vision being “Whole Child. Whole School. Whole Community.”, we are excited to bring reading to our community of learners!
“The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print."* We have students without home libraries (for some, no homes even).
With this fact in mind, we will provide each child with a new book to keep and enjoy over the summer. Each time they come to one of the six meet-ups, held throughout the school summer vacation, they will receive a new book. What a fantastic way to encourage literacy, continue conversations, and keep our students and community connected!
The materials chosen for this Donors Choose grant include books for our younger readers. Featured characters of the books selected include Elephant and Piggy, Biscuit, Froggy and even includes Jack and Annie, of the Magic Tree House series! We do anticipate the majority of our attendees to be our littlest readers. We are so excited to see their faces as they realize the book is just for them!
Thank you for helping us in our literacy mission!
