Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where students face several challenges at school and at home. The majority of the students at the school are on free or reduced lunch. Although my students have many educational gaps and struggles, they are always excited to be at school. I would love to provide a my students with a rich learning environment.
My students are inquisitive and always excited to learn something new.
I would love to provide my students with many learning opportunities, because they truly deserve it. I am lucky to spend my days with such an amazing group of kids.
My Project
This project will make a huge difference in my students' lives. One of the areas that my students struggle with is reading. The majority of the school is made up of ELL students. Having a variety of interesting chapter books and graphic novels in my classroom will help improve my students' fluency and their interest in reading. During independent reading time, students will have the opportunity to read amazing books that they can choose from. This year I have such an amazing group of kids who have requested books to read. I want to be able to cultivate their love of reading in my classroom.
These books have sparked reading interest in my dormant readers.
My ELL students especially benefit from graphic novels. It has been amazing to see my students move from graphic novels to chapter books series such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Phoebe and Her Unicorn.
