My students who I affectionately call "my kiddos" are urban kids, who attend their neighborhood school. My school has a universal breakfast program which provides breakfast to ALL students. All our students also qualify for FREE lunch.
In my classroom very high expectations are set for my kiddos.
They are taught to respect one another, adults and most importantly THEMSELVES! They know that we are a "team" and must always work together to reach our goals. In grade two, making mistakes is just part of learning. We learn, grow, and laugh together.
Students will use these book donations to analyze text for multiple purposes. These books will encourage students to become life long readers who can think critically and independently.
My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
As an educator, my job is to increase comprehension but it's also important to expose my students to culturally relevant texts to increase cultural awareness and empathy.
These books will also be used to improve student writing through response to text. This will enhance the reading and writing connection and give students the opportunity to study author's craft.
