Help me give my students a novel to read and practice their annotation skills during virtual learning at home, with remediation workbooks for 10 students who need a little extra help.
I teach English language arts and the humanities in the Appalachian area of eastern Kentucky. My students work hard, but their opportunities are limited by poverty and our rural location. Many come from single-parent households or live with elderly grandparents, and school may be the brightest light in their lives. The median household income is $22,000, and the poverty rate is just under 40%. Despite poverty, my students are among the most intelligent, talented, and capable students anywhere.
My students work hard and consistently do more with less because neither their families nor our community have the resources to provide the tools, materials, and opportunities to fully develop their abilities.
With equal resources and opportunity, my students can hold their own against any others, and I'm proud of them each and every day.
My Project
I have classroom sets of books which students share, but virtual learning and Covid 19 makes sharing books in or out of the classroom impossible. And while students can read virtually, not all have reliable internet service and digital annotation is difficult for many.
If this project is funded, my students will each receive a book of their own to read at home, and they will practice annotation skills and marginal notes to help them locate textual evidence and important information for after-reading questions, interactive discussions, open book quizzes, and tests.
Additionally, 10 students who are not reading on grade level will receive workbooks to target reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
