Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Title I school in North Carolina serves a community of vibrant and curious students. They are eager to learn about the world around them and offer solutions to the challenges of today's world.

More than anything, my students love to read.

During a recent unit on Japan, students begged for more books on Japanese culture and spent their free time reading articles about life in Japan. I would love to be able to provide them with more books to satiate their curiosity.

My Project

My students have spent the beginning of the school year reading about very serious topics such as the election, life in Nazi occupied territories, and the aftermath of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima.

In 2017, my students will to delve into the fantastical world of Avi's Poppy.

This challenging fourth grade text is not only engaging but a wonderful text for teaching students about the author's craft. Avi has written over 50 books for children (including 4 more books in the Poppy series) and for many kids reading Poppy means discovering their favorite author.

To engage all students, I hope that this year I can have a grade level set for all my 75 4th graders readers. This would allow for a much more authentic of reading than using photocopies of the teacher's copy of the book. These books will be well maintained and used for years to come by my students.
