Ms. Wilkison from Kansas City MO is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need reading materials that are at grade levels below what are offered in our library. These books are greatly needed in my classroom. Also requested is a TIME for Kids magazine subscription.

I love my students! My students all live in Missouri. It is a very urban area, which I love. My students are amazing! I am currently finishing my first year with the district and look forward to returning to teach in this district in the fall. My students are funny, insightful, curious and full of natural intelligence.
My Reading Lab and English 9 students all have IEPs and are significantly behind grade level in reading.
These classes are specifically designed to help exceptional education students receive the support they need in order to be successful in the classroom. These students are a wonderful challenge! They bring their own unique and complex needs into the classroom. Because they are all well below grade level in reading, I am writing this project to create a library of books in my room that will be interesting to high school students, but also written at a level that they can comprehend. I feel this is important in order for my students to gain confidence in their reading abilities.
I have focused this project on getting reading-level appropriate books for my freshmen students who are currently behind grade level in their reading skills. The books we have in our school library in the Freshmen Center are all written at at least the 9th grade level, which is up to 6 grade levels ahead of where many of my students are. The Grade 6 Classic Grade Level Library will provide my students with reading materials that will stretch them beyond their current reading level without overwhelming them. The TIME magazine subscription is also an excellent resource for my students to not only increase their reading skills, but also help them remain up-to-date on current events.
I have chosen books that will be interesting for my students, but at a lower grade level, so that my students will be able to grow as readers to a higher reading level, but not be overwhelmed with the difficulty of the text.
