My students need books that are at their reading level and that they can read independently. The books on this list include graphic novels and other series books that are high interest and engaging.
I teach 5th grade in a co-taught and inclusive setting. Our students are hard workers that want to do well in school. Although we are a high performing school year after year, our neediest students still need a great deal of support in order to make steady progress--especially in the area of literacy.
Over the years, our biggest struggle has been how to reach and engage our struggling readers.
Many of our students are reading well-below grade level (at least 2-3 years below). Our kids want to read, but they struggle to find books that are at their reading level, but are still age-appropriate.
My Project
In our classroom, we are passionate about instilling a love for reading in each of our students. Unfortunately, for students with reading difficulties, the options for age appropriate books that they can read on their own decreases as they get older. Many of our kids are embarrassed to read because the books at their reading level are too "babyish" and they are embarrassed to let their peers know that they cannot read the "big books" that their friends are reading.
My goal with this project is to build a classroom library with books that our struggling readers can read independently and with dignity.
The books I have selected are all books that struggling readers can read independently. If we are ever going to help our students to make improvements in reading, they need access to a variety of books at a variety of reading levels. Please help us make a difference in the lives of our students!
